RANSOMWARE ATTACK ON MEAT PROCESSING GIANT JBS

On May 30, JBS USA announced that it was the target of an organized attack that affected its servers located in North America and Australia.

JBS was hit by a ransomware attack that temporarily suspended operations at nine commodity factories in the United States and disrupted the operation of other sites. The FBI attributed the attacks to Russia-related ransomware, a group that is well known for both REvil and Sodinokibi.

JBS, the largest meat supplier, confirmed on Wednesday that it had paid the equivalent of an $ 11 million ransom to hackers that targeted it, and temporarily paralyzed its business.

The company confirmed that it had made the contribution in a statement released on Wednesday, saying it had done so, and after that the plant started up again. The company cooperates with technology employees and foreign IT specialists say that and the decision to pay it, be sure that the information has not been stolen, however.

IDENTIFICATION

Ransomware attacks are usually fairly simple. Hackers often use phishing scams, and send e-mails to employees that contain suspicious links or attachments. If someone clicks on that button, a hacker can gain access to the system and to collect valuable data. For in-house it blocks the key of a computer system and demands a ransom in order to regain control of the company. Increasingly, hackers are going to demand fees in order to stop it is to steal and leak private company information online.

Hackers on regular basis, requires that the payments are made in bitcoin or not, cryptocurrencies can be more traceable, and is the subject of a small number of statutes than traditional currencies. According to the newspaper, JBS made a payment in bitcoin.

These attacks are difficult to protect all of the access points that hackers can target. Cyber criminals often work together as part of a weak, defines the ransomware gang to spend the resources to gain as many benefits as possible.

IT-experts say that the food tends to do a poor job of protecting your network from attacks due to the lack of investment, and it can be said that there is no regulation or of uniform standards.

An IT consultant who works for a large AMERICAN facilities for the processing of the meat, and who asked not to be named to discuss the confidential affairs, said the state’s security posture in general “does not exist.” The companies that are active in the meat processing industry, and commodity markets often lack basic safety because they believe that it is, in its turn, the intellectual property is valuable to hackers, he said.

JBS is ranked 10 out of 57,251 food to be evaluated by the company. The rating is based on a number of key cyber security indicators.

Several workers who worked for security issues of the JBS in the united states and Australia, have left the company over the past few years, in part because of that management provide a large budget to reinforce the security of our internal systems, according to two former employees.

Two of the former employees said that it was a standing joke that there was a way to substantially improve their cyber-security after a major hack.
